Take Control of Your Computer With These 14 Keyboard Shortcuts
The Control button (Ctrl) on your keyboard can simplify your life. It is the recipe to many keyboard shortcuts that will help you cut down on time, searching documents, and additional unnecessary typing. You will be amazed at how much easier your computer becomes when you use these buttons with the Ctrl button on your computer.
Ctrl + F
Have you ever needed to find a specific word or sentence in a document or webpage and been stuck scrolling and power reading through the whole thing? Waste no more time with that with the Ctrl + F keys. When you press these together a search box will pop up, just enter the word you were hoping to find and it will lead you right to it.
Ctrl + C
Use this shortcut when you need to copy text from a webpage or any word article. Simply highlight the text you want to be copied and press Ctrl + C. This will save you time from having to right click it or use the menu bars to hit copy.
Ctrl + X
Additional to C, you would use Ctrl + X to copy the text you have highlighted while also removing it from the current document. You can then paste this text you cut from the document where you actually intended for it to be. This saves you from having to copy, paste, and then go back and delete the first version.
Ctrl + V
With all the cutting and copying, of course, there is a shortcut for pasting that text! Just click where you want to paste it, whether that is in a new paragraph or even in a Google search bar and simply press Ctrl + V.
Ctrl + Z
We all make mistakes! This is your anti-mistake button command. Maybe you accidentally deleted a word or paragraph you didn’t mean to. Just hit Ctrl + Z to undo that action and save yourself from having to retype it all. This is the best command… ever.
Ctrl + Y
This will redo your undo. Let’s say you thought you made a mistake so you hit Ctrl + Z to undo it, but you realized it wasn’t really a mistake. Luckily the Ctrl + Y command will re-undo it for you.
Ctrl + S
Never forget to save one of your documents again. We have all been in that situation where we are just finishing up a document, but then something happens and we lose it all. The Ctrl + S command will help. Now periodically between typing, all you have to do is hit this command and it will save your document without having to take your fingers off of the keyboard. It makes saving so easy.
Ctrl + B
Some parts of your writing documents need to be bolded. The easiest way to bold is to hit Ctrl + B before typing the word you want bolded. I’m doing it now and it is making bolding FUN!
Ctrl + U
Just like bolding, you also need things underlined. Same thing, but with a different command. Try this Ctrl + U command the next time you need it.
Ctrl + I
Hey, it works for italics too! Just remember, when you want to stop typing in italics, hit Ctrl + I again and it will stop!
Ctrl + P
Make printing your documents as easy and time-consuming as possible. When you hit Ctrl + P your print screen will appear, no more looking through file… or is it under edit? Maybe you go to page layout? Let Ctrl + P make it easy.
Ctrl + T
Sometimes when you are in a web browser you want to search something different without having to leave the page you are currently on. When you hit Ctrl + T a new tab will open up for you. This is a brand new page to search on and won’t affect the other tab that you wanted to keep open.
Ctrl + Shift + T
The next time you accidentally close out of an important webpage you had opened this command will be your savior. We’ve all had it where there was an important page opened, but while closing our other unimportant tabs we accidentally closed the important one too. Do not fret! Ctrl + Shift + T will reopen any tabs that you had just closed.
Bonus Shortcut (Not a Ctrl, but great to know!)
Alt + Tab
I know this isn’t a Ctrl command, but it is awesome and I use it every day. The reason it is used every day is because on most days I will have a couple separate web pages open, a word document, an excel document, my email, and whatever else. When you press Alt + Tab you can easily navigate through these different opened applications and find the one you want. It makes your hectic life a little more peaceful, one Alt + Tab click at a time.
